appointing the European Data Protection Supervisor

THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

Having regard to Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by the Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Regulation (EC) No 45/2001 and Decision No 1247/2002/EC1, and in particular Article 53(1) thereof,

Having regard to the list of candidates drawn up by the European Commission on 30 October 2019, in accordance with Article 53(1) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1725, following a public call for candidates, with a view to the appointment of the European Data Protection Supervisor,

Whereas:

By Decision 2014/886/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council2, Mr Giovanni BUTTARELLI was appointed as the European Data Protection Supervisor and Mr Wojciech Rafał WIEWIÓROWSKI as the Assistant Supervisor, for the period from 4 December 2014 to 5 December 2019.

Mr Giovanni BUTTARELLI passed away on 20 August 2019. In accordance with Article 100(4) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1725, the Assistant Supervisor therefore replaced the European Data Protection Supervisor for the remainder of the Assistant Supervisor’s term of office, which comes to an end on 5 December 2019.

The European Data Protection Supervisor is to be appointed by common accord between the European Parliament and the Council for a period of five years from 6 December 2019,
