  • AHRB – the Arts and Humanities Research Board

  • AHRC – the Arts and Humanities Research Council

  • DfES – the Department for Education and Skills

  • the Director – the Director of Fair Access to Higher Education

  • DTI – the Department for Trade and Industry

  • ECHR – the European Convention on Human Rights

  • HEFCE – the Higher Education Funding Council for England

  • HEFCW – the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales

  • HEIs – higher education institutions

  • LEA – local education authority

  • OFFA – the Office for Fair Access, which will be headed by the Director of Fair Access to Higher Education

  • TTA – the Teacher Training Agency
